Postcard Friendship Friday

I've gotten a lot of postcards from friends this year and am going to post them - starting with this wonderful vintage picture one from Gina in Ireland. Isn't it amazing? Look at the size of that boat, and imagine those men fishing from that boat - wow! Thanks Gina - I love it.

Thanks for all your advice on the fence color. The funny thing is that I was leaning towards a pink color but was thinking that it might look like an Easter egg. Great to have the support of my buddies! Here it is with a pinkish fence (no polka dots KJ - altho the idea was attractive). This is going out to my friends today for their collection. The one below is from last year. I can see that I've gotten a bit more confident with colors!


Isn't it funny how you can look at something and think of changes you should have made? The first one...I should have put an airplane towing a banner with "First Annual..etc." sign, and in the second one, I should have put the 2nd annual notice on a towel hanging on the fence. Live and learn....

Postcard Friday - Madison sq and a beach

At first I assumed that this was Coney Island only because alot of the postcards in my collection are from NYCity - but now I don't think so. Maybe the Jersey shore?


I say Jersey shore because of the note on the back of the card " The run down here was simply great. The roads splendid. Enjoying it immensely. Love Tillie" And the card was sent to East 18th street in Brooklyn.
Well, knowing the geography well - you probably wouldn't write about driving to Coney Island - which is why I think that one of Eugenie's friends got adventurous and drove to NEW JERSEY - on those splendid roads and stayed for a time on the Jersey Shore.

Of course after all this conjecture on my part, and looking for clues...I finally noticed the postmark from...

Atlantic City, New Jersey.

I'm such a good sleuth~


This is a current picture of the night life on the Pier at Atlantic City - looks a bit more lively than the postcard.
This one is a picture of Madison Square in NYC - no writing on the back. But I just love it - look at all those horse drawn carts and the awnings on the windows. This picture is taken from the "Fuller Building" which is also known as the Flatiron Building in Madison Square. I don't have a postcard of the Flatiron Building but have found a few pictures of it now so you can see the difference between the Madison Square of 1909 and now.



This is the Flatiron Building now - in Madison Square. No sleepy town square anymore.

PostCard Friday - #1

Postcard Friday - what a great concept - it's a way to show all these amazing postcards that I have. Let me explain.

When we lived in Brooklyn, there was a real New York lady who lived in the apartment next to us, whose name was Eugenie Dillingham (Mrs. Dillingham to us!). She was very proper, always friendly to us kids, but reserved. But I liked her and of course, wish that I had gotten to know her better - what a treasure of stories she must have had about old New York. To me she was vaguely foreign, not Jewish, very waspy.

She moved away when I was about 13 or so - which was great for us in another way - but I'll tell that story later. She was moving to a retirement home in Connecticut and couldn't take all her things with her. She offered to sell my mom a little lamp for $10.00 - mom was so honest that she blurted out that the lamp was a real Tiffany and worth a fortune - needless to say, we didn't get it for $10.00.

She gave me some old dresses and a box full of postcards from the turn of the century. I love the cards but have NO idea what to do with them - or how to preserve them. I've put them into a postcard album but there they sit, unloved and unlooked at. So Postcard Friday is a great way to bring them out into the open. Here's the first one...or two...




I can tell I'll be a scanning maniac getting these all into the computer to post - but it's better than letting them sit in the attic
