No Loincloth Worn for This Class

I have missed a few classes so am a bit behind others but did manage to go to drawing class list night. I am by far and away the most untalented, worst person in the class. Some of the drawings that the others do are just awesome, I just hope that they have been practicing for years and years. In the first drawing I took DH's advice and focused on one section instead of getting overwhelmed with a whole body. Maybe if I do it piece by piece it will all come together. In the second drawing, I figured that there wasn't much to see so I tried to do the whole piece. The instructor is really nice, very encouraging - I think sometimes he thinks I might have two heads but is very quiet about that. I like him and would consider taking more courses from him. I'm trying REALLY hard to see dark/light section but it is VERY hard for me to get over seeing the whole form. But I remember the advice from Fern. JUST KEEP looking. Press your nose up against the tree and SEE the colors. Where I see brown or grey...she saw red, yellow, blue, violet.

I am still training my brain to see things in a new way and it is tough, tough, tough!!! but fun also.

I wonder what he would think of Miss Em - might just bring in some of those pieces to show him.

Well, since my ultimate goal is to learn to draw legs for walking fishes, I think I'll be OK. I might learn to draw arms too, so that the fish can carry things. My little fantasy world, with a few bits of reality thrown in.

They've Found the Cause of Earthquakes

Don't you just wonder sometimes?

One more thing to be scared of on this warm Halloween day.

Quilting makes me feel in control

I realized this today while working on the bottom quilt at 6:00 am. Now, the reality is that I have been asked to make 3 baby quilts for friends - so I've had a mission going anyway. The first one below, is baby sized and sort of a crazy quilt with many different fabrics and all done on the diagonal. I'm just finishing the binding and it will go to it's new home next week (I hope)

And the second one - well, while buying quilt batting for the first one, I saw this green/blue collection of fabric and decided to try making a baby quilt from those fabrics, side by side with white squares. But once I got everything all cut out, I realized that I didn't like it for a baby quilt..so am making it for myself! The colors don't show up so well in the basement light but it's really pretty, and very springlike and cool looking (why am I making this as fall is approaching? - let's not even try to analyze the hidden denial in that one)

But as I was sewing this morning I got (once again) the revelation that sewing quilt squares is a way of control for me - and after a few weeks of being off work, and having fun with family, and then going back to work...well I need to feel like I can control something. I used to clean house when I felt like this, now I make quilts.

I'd rather make quilts. I'll save the housecleaning for dire times - where very serious control is needed. When it's either clean...or get some serious revenge on whatever is pissing me off.

Friends' Art - a joy to receive

I hope a hyphen doesn't count as a word. I'm been receiving such wonderful ATC's and artwork and want to show it all - or at least most.

A new Corkboard in my studio - I hope you can double click to see the wonderful things I have received. Not everything is on the board yet, but I have two more boards on the side. Always room for more artwork. Not everything is posted yet but will be.

A Cactus-Zentangle from Lynn. Isn't it great? I love the contrast of the green and blue, up lines and cross lines. This works so well.

A watch-duck from Cris. Look at the way he is sitting there, just watching and waiting to see if something happens (what DO ducks wait for?)

A cubism ATC from Soulbrush with three inchies. Firstly the colors in the cubism work so well together, and the inchies - are just adorable. But, I keep saying to myself - NO inchies for you. NOT another thing. No!! (but they are cute)

I got this fish on newspaper a few weeks ago from Laurel and framed it. Itsn't it wonderful?

Now some of my work in process - be interested in your opinions.

Started a new fish watercolor. This is just the basis - they need alot more texture and some context. With a hint from Lolo and DH, the fish in the back is slightly lighter....

This piece I had in B and W for a long time, and have recently started to color it. Again, more texture needed - colored pencils, pastels. We'll see how it works out.

This is a little segment from the picture above - I love those little fish.

When I started into this art journey I bought a whole bunch of those pre-made items from the Michaels store, mainly because I thought they were cute and I thought I'd never be able to draw them. Well, I haven't used them in years and finally gave 95% away the other day. But I kept a few and am using them as props for fun. Here, Miss Em is beginning to learn to play the cello - but she has forgotten her yellow shoes!

Have a happy Saturday!

Post script - just got these beauties from Teri - the frog ATC and two wonderful Moo cards...talented lady that Teri...

"I hope I don't get hurt!!!"

This is not an emotional plea - it's a serious hope for no bodily harm. I am taking a "introduction to mountain biking" class today and I'm seriously hoping that there is someone more chicken than me in the class and that the 20-somethings who are teaching it have pity on me. DH signed me up for this, he took it last year or the year before and enjoyed it. When he took it - it started at 9:00 am, they had a lunch break, and were done by 1:00. Mine goes to 3:00 PM. I'm expecting to be tired, as..as noted above...and am hoping to come home in one piece.

Last night I realized how long it had been since I worked on some artwork down in the basement, so I went down and started to clean up and fool around. I made some ATC sized paper and started to play (thought of you Teri!). Here are some quickies...

This fish was pretty crisp looking but then I added some acrylic medium - and must have added it too soon, as the WC smeared around. A lesson - LET YOUR WATERCOLOR DRY BEFORE PLAYING WITH IT!!

This fish one is my favorite.
Have a good day everyone - and think of me out in the hot day trying to keep up with other biking wanna-be's
