Eyes

I needed glasses as a kid but no one picked up on this - not parents...or teachers. Until I was 10 I walked around in a fog and in my own little world. I never knew that there were leaves on the trees - they were just a big green blob to me. You should have seen me squint when they picked me (last) for the baseball team - I couldn't see the ball until it was about to hit me. Imagine my surprise when I got glasses at about 10 years old....wow to the whole world. ( As I am writing this I suddenly realize why I was such a scared kid...not being able to see what was going on was fairly terrifying - I'm amazed I made it out the door every day.. KJ - move over - you've got another brave kid going out into the world every day)
Back to the eye story...
I wore glasses in varying fashions about 10 years ago. Then I got the magic of lasik in one eye, and used the other one for reading. They call it mono-vision. Free from glasses for the first time - LOVED IT! But then a few years ago I started needing reading glasses...so I have dozens in all colors (from the cheap store). Red ones, green ones, sparkly ones, serious one. But recently it was clear that I needed prescription ones so I went to the eye doctor yesterday and prepared to spend a small fortune on glasses that would let me see far with that reading eye and read with both eyes. I figured that I'd need sunglasses also, so you could be talking BIG bucks for two sets of glasses. I was going to bring an old pair with me so that I could reuse the frames - but knew that a dear friend would crack me over the head if she saw me in my grannie glasses again. So mentally I prepared myself for over $500.00 in glasses.

Imagine my surprise when the optomotrist told me that my long vision had corrected to 20/20 in the "reading" eye; gave me a contact lens for reading; charged me $15.00 and said "see ya - let me know how it works out".

I have to get used to the lens, and some differences in seeing but I'm just amazed. I went to a store and got charged LESS than I thought I would.

Imagine that.

Wow.. Congrats..Miracles DO happen.
I love a happy ending. :) My mom had something like that happen to her. She used to have to wear glasses to drive and it was on her drivers licence but her eyes changed later in life and that was taken off she could see so much better. Amazing really.

This is wonderful news for you. I've been wearing prescription glasses since I was eight and cannot wear contacts. So wish I could. You are fortunate you can. It is amazing to be charged less that you thought. Good things happen in unexpected ways.

Mim, is your real name Benjamin Button? Because it sounds like you're aging in reverse!

I wear bifocal contacts. I can't wear glasses because I feel like I'm going to throw up within five minutes. I have NO idea what I'll do once I really have to wear glasses because contacts won't be an option. Long story short, I caused this! I never needed glasses until I started wearing those cheap drug store glasses and ruined my eyes. Well, okay. I never had an eye exam until it was too late.
So?????

I love your green eye!

Mim I am glad about the end result but I feel so sorry for the little girl you were before you got glasses.

That is a hard one to swallow.

It shows me how brave you really are though.

My sister could tell the same tale of not being able to see until she was 10. She also was quiet and shy during her time of not being able to see well. After she got her glasses she became a different person. I am so glad you didn't have to buy new glasses and spend a bunch of money. That rarely happens.

Holy Cow! My heart breaks for the little girl you. Years ago I ran a home based nursery school and we had one little toddler that ran every where and bumped into everything. Lots of energy but we thought clumpsy! I asked the mom if she thought to have her eyes checked and she did it at my suggestion: Wha La, the kid got glasses and no more bumping into everything!

I can equate my hearing loss of latter years and getting hearing aids to your seeing the leaves on the trees. I could suddenly HEAR the birds singing in the trees!
It was so amazing. I also love that I can turn them off and have peace and quiet in a noisy world if I want to too! ;-)

Glad you got such a good deal! One lens! Go figure! Lucky you! Sharp optomitrist too!

Yay, lucky you. I too went to the eye doc this week, only I was told that I have early cataracts. Oh, well, it's to be expected.

How in the world does one's vision correct itself? Why can't mine correct itself already?

oky doky, here i am back after admiring the quilt and ms. em's dance routine at least 20 times. (you rock you know...)

i went to the eye doctor two weeks ago and i spent everything you saved. over $ 500 for glasses and frames. of course mim, you know i'm working on being kjbabe so i won't mind the $$$ if my appearance is enhanced considerably. no more john lennon glasses for me. then again, i hope i don't end up looking like sarah palin (haha).

it's no surprise that your little girl and my little girl bravely faced the world. they would have been friends. instead, they had to wait until they were grownups...

love
kj
