Mom's Bday

I got here yesterday and the house felt foreign, and quiet and strange.

By today - it's still quiet but I'm settling in and see that Mom is doing the same in her slow way. We spent the day going thru old crap and cleaning and talking. OK by me - it's cathartic.

Dinner with relatives...then home and one milestone down.

Tomorrow we're going to look at dogs and maybe cats. It'll help I think.

Okay with that.

hmmm...looking at dogs and cats. Does that mean like just looking at them or is someone adopting?? I know I need to cathartized! I am still wallowing in disarray here, finding every excuse not to dig and and go through boxes and put pictures back on the walls in the basement/den and more...But I am happy for the first day of Spring!

Happy Bday to your Mom.

I pet might be a good thing for her. Keep her active both mentally and physically. When my first DH died I walked the legs off my poor dog, but it helped.

Take care.

I thought the process of going through things and talking was very helpful and wanted actually. I hope your mom is doing well, enjoy your time there if possible and looking at cats and dogs-to adopt?

Were you at the old house or at her new digs? Is she now living in some more communal situation?
And she can have a dog there or a cat? Wonderful. Sounded good for both of you.

I hope you both get what you need in the changes that you face. Memories, comfort or hand holding.
Or all of the above ;)

That first trip home after losing a parent is difficult. I do hope your Mom gets a pet to keep her company. It will be so comforting to have a living being with her. I vote for a cat. They aren't a lot of trouble and give so much.

thinking of you, mim. i imagine there is some "space" missing or reconfigured in the house. don't forget to look for signs from your father. mine sends flowers my way that shouldn't be where they are...

i think it's wonderful that you and your mom are together right now.

I am slowly working through the piles of John's stuff I brought with me that I never should have...LOL. I know he's laughing at me while I do it.

Last summer when I was at my Aunt's, we were out in the back pasture looking at fruit trees and the labyrinth and a whirlwind blew up and dumped litter all over us. We laughed and laughed and I know it was Uncle Glen.

You KNOW how I feel about cats and dogs....the more the merrier. If it's for your Mom, you couldn't do any better than an adult, neutered tom cat-they are the biggest love bugs around, yet very low maintenance.

Kind of curious....

Lovely for you and your mom that you are there helping o sort and tidy and find a companion. my opinion is cats are much easier than a dog but I've never been a dog person. I guess I missed the post abt your mom no longer living where she had lived before. In any event, i know your being there means the world to her. And to you.

I know exactly what you mean about how the house felt! I hope your time with your mother is restful. A new pet may be very good for your mother. Good luck with your looking!

hi there- I wrote to you during soon after your father's death, and every now and then I check back with you. Tomorrow we will be celebrating my mother's 85th birthday. This will be her first time since she turned 17 that my dad won't be saying happy birthday. Glad you guys got through the b-day.
